Intent
Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity (National Curriculum 2014). We want art to give children the courage to express their unique selves through creativity, experimentation and freedom of choice. Our diverse art curriculum provides opportunities for the progression of skills, brain development, self-esteem, challenge and enjoyment by looking at artwork from a range of artists, cultures and time periods. We love to make art and design enjoyable and motivating for children as this will help develop positive attitudes in school and life beyond school.
Implementation
At St Mary’s, we have created a bespoke art curriculum which covers the objectives set out in the National Curriculum.
Discovery time in the Early Years supports children in laying important foundations for their artistic development. The learning environment provides children with a variety of media and resources that can be self-selected, allowing children to take charge of their learning.
In Key Stage 1 and 2, one art unit is delivered either as a block of lessons across a 2-3 week period or weekly per term. Within each unit the children use their own sketch books to focus on a particular artist, culture or art movement where they will research, explore, experiment and apply learnt techniques such as drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
The curriculum is delivered consistently across the school in a series of lessons that complement each other and build upon prior learning. The skills taught are progressive and are built upon as the children make their way through school.
Pupils have abundant opportunities to refine their skills and exhibit their artwork during themed days and events such as ‘Take One Picture’, ‘The Big Draw’ and various exhibitions - both within the school and the wider community. Art is also used to enrich other subjects across the curriculum, allowing all children to flourish creatively.
